Iraqi on trial for setting ex-wife on fire in Germany

Munich (dpa) – A 36-year-old Iraqi appeared in court on Thursday charged with stabbing and setting fire to his ex-wife on a street hours after the couple was divorced.

The 24-year-old woman died in hospital two hours after the October 2006 attack, which was witnessed by the couple’s 5-year-old son and numerous passers-by.

Prosecutors allege Mahmud K. lay in wait for the woman as she returned to her flat in the town of Garching, near Munich.

He reportedly stabbed her 12 times in the head and chest, and while she was lying injured on the ground, doused her with petrol, which he set alight.

Neighbours tried to put out the flames with water before a policeman arrived and arrested the attacker.

The woman, Sazan B, suffered fatal burns to the face and upper part of her body, police said.

Mahmud K, reportedly admitted to the murder during police questioning. He told investigators he felt “betrayed” by his wife’s action in obtaining a divorce.

During their prior separation, the woman had won a court order preventing her husband from approaching her because of his violent behaviour.

The accused, who hails from the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, sought political asylum in Germany in 1996. He was allowed to remain in the country although his application was rejected.

The couple’s son, who was uninjured in the attack, is now being looked after by a foster family.
