Spain is actively advancing a multimillion-euro defense deal with Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.

Despite its outspoken criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza and vocal support for an arms embargo, Spain has continued purchasing Israeli military technology—raising eyebrows about Madrid’s contradictory stance.
An exposé by Spanish newspaper El Mundo reveals that, behind its political posturing, Spain is actively advancing a multimillion-euro defense deal with Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.
The purchase, focused on tactical radio communication systems, comes despite previous pledges by the Spanish government to cut military ties with Israel.
In 2024, Spain’s Defense Ministry publicly announced it was initiating a process to sever defense technology relationships with Israel amid political pressure from far-left parties within the ruling coalition.
These factions condemned Israeli actions in Gaza and demanded an end to military cooperation.
The government even canceled certain ammunition deals with Israel and promised a halt to further weapons purchases.
But El Mundo reports that Madrid quietly approved funding for Israeli radio systems as part of its 2025 defense budget.
The initial phase of the contract is worth €350 million ($393 million), with the full scope of the agreement potentially reaching €768 million ($862 million).
Spain has already received 1,500 radio units, with 3,500 more scheduled for delivery over the next year—part of a larger order totaling 11,000 systems.
While the deliveries faced political delays, the Spanish government ultimately justified the move through a royal decree.
The decree cited the lack of domestic industrial capability to meet military needs and framed the partnership with Elbit as a temporary solution to bridge technological gaps—despite its earlier commitments to isolate Israel militarily.
