Over a thousand prisoners, including many serving life sentences, will be released by Israel as part of its ceasefire agreement with Hamas, according to details reported by Palestinian and Israeli media on Wednesday night.

Mediators who announced the deal on Wednesday stated that the ceasefire will begin on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. The operation to free the hostages, named “Wings of Freedom,” will commence the same day with the release of the first group of hostages. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces is finalizing preparations to ensure the hostages’ security and their safe transfer to hospitals in Israel.

Prisoner and hostage exchange

The deal includes the release of prisoners from Gaza detained on Oct. 8, 2023, following the Hamas-led massacre that initiated the war. These individuals were not involved in the Oct. 7 attack.

A total of 33 hostages, out of the 98 held by Hamas in Gaza, are set to be released during the first phase. The agreement specifies that nine sick and injured captives will be exchanged for 110 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences in Israeli prisons.

Hostages over the age of 50 from the list of 33 will be freed according to a ratio of 1:3 for life sentences and 1:27 for other sentences.

Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, Israelis held in Gaza since 2015 and 2014, respectively, will be released under a 1:30 exchange ratio, along with 47 prisoners freed under the 2011 Gilad Shalit deal who were later re-arrested. Additional Palestinian prisoners abroad or in Gaza will be freed based on lists agreed upon by both sides.

Philadelphi Corridor

Israel is to gradually reduce its military presence in the Philadelphi Corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border during the first stage. The IDF would begin to withdraw from the corridor on the 42nd day of the first phase, after the release of the final hostage for the phase, and complete the withdrawal by the 50th day.

A senior Israeli diplomatic official clarified this aspect of the agreement on Thursday, addressing reports suggesting that Israeli troops might begin withdrawing from the Philadelphi Corridor at the start of the ceasefire.

According to Hebrew media, the official stated that soldiers would remain in the corridor for the entire 42-day first stage of the ceasefire, though their deployment would be adjusted. Negotiations to end the conflict will commence on day 16, and if Hamas rejects Israel’s terms, Israeli forces will remain in the corridor beyond the 42nd day, potentially until day 50, with no definitive timeline for withdrawal, according to the official.

“Israel will stay in the Philadelphi Corridor until further notice,” the official said.

Rafah Crossing

The Rafah Crossing to Egypt will be prepared for civilian and medical evacuations immediately after the agreement is signed.

• Israeli forces will redeploy around Rafah according to agreed maps.

• Daily passage of 50 wounded Hamas fighters, accompanied by three individuals each, will be allowed, subject to Israeli and Egyptian approval.

• All sick and injured Palestinian civilians will be permitted to exit via Rafah, in line with Clause 12 of the May 27, 2024 agreement.

The crossing’s operation will follow consultations held with Egypt in August 2024.

IDF redeployment

Israeli forces will withdraw eastward from populated areas along Gaza’s border, including Wadi Gaza, the Netzarim Route and Kuwait Circle, and redeploy to a perimeter along the Gaza border 700 meters deep. Five exceptions extending up to an additional 400 meters will be determined by Israel.

Return of displaced persons

• On the seventh day, displaced individuals may return to northern Gaza on foot, without weapons or security checks, via Al-Rashid Street.

• By the 22nd day, returns will also be permitted via Salah al-Din Street, without checks.

• Vehicles may return northward via the Netzarim Route on the seventh day, subject to inspection by a private company designated by mediators and coordinated with Israel.

Second-phase goals

The agreement seeks to finalize the terms of the May 27, 2024 framework for a comprehensive hostage-prisoner exchange and a durable ceasefire. Measures implemented in the first phase will continue, and mediators will ensure negotiations progress toward a final agreement.

Og at Trump så til gengæld har lovet Bibi at forsyne Israel med våben , så Israel selv kan ødelægge de Iranske atom-anlæg og olieanlæg, så mullaherne der forhåbentlig ikke kan opretholde regimet, alternativt at USA ( og Israel ) ødelægger de underjordiske atomanlæg.

Ellers har jeg meget svært ved at se , hvorfor Trump skulle presse Israel til sådan en lorte aftale

Jeg er helt med på at Trump først og fremmest vil arbejde for amerikanske interesser, men jeg kan ikke se at USA skulle have nogen som helst interesse i at hamas overlever og får en kæmpe sejr, der kun kan gavne andre muslimske terrorrister …

• When a terrorist group “negotiates” with a democracy, it always has the upper hand. The terrorists are not constrained by morality, law or truth. They can murder at will, rape at will, torture at will and threaten to do worse. The democracy, on the other hand, must comply with the rules of law and must listen to the pleas of the hostage families.
• Especially complicit, with blood on their hands, are supporters of Hamas on university campuses who chant for intifada and revolution. Also complicit are international organizations, such as the International Criminal Court, that treat Israel and Hamas as equals.
• [L]et us put the blame for ALL the deaths in Gaza where it belongs: on Hamas and the useful idiots and useless bigots who support murderous terrorists.

Would you call it a deal if somebody kidnapped your child and you “agreed” to pay ransom to get her back? Of course not. The kidnapping was a crime. And the extortionate demand was an additional crime.

So the proper description of what occurred is that Israel, pressured by the United States, capitulated to the unlawful and extortionate demands of Hamas as the only way of saving the lives of kidnapped babies, mothers and other innocent, mostly civilian, hostages.

This was not the result of a negotiation between equals. If an armed robber puts a gun to your head and says, “your money or your life,” your decision to give him your money would not be described as a deal. Nor should the extorted arrangement agreed to by Israel be considered a deal. So let’s stop using that term.

When a terrorist group “negotiates” with a democracy, it always has the upper hand. The terrorists are not constrained by morality, law or truth. They can murder at will, rape at will, torture at will and threaten to do worse. The democracy, on the other hand, must comply with the rules of law and must listen to the pleas of the hostage families. The result of this exertion was bad for Israel’s security, but good for the hostages who remain alive and their families. The heart rules the brain, as it often does in moral democracies that value the immediate saving of the lives of known people over the future deaths of hypothetical people whose identities we do not know. This tradeoff is understandable as compassionate, even if not compelling as policy.

If every democratic nation adopted a policy of never negotiating with terrorists, it might discourage terrorism. But every nation submits to the demands of kidnappers and extortionists, so terrorism and hostage-taking have become a primary tactic of the worst people in the world. And the rest of us are complicit.

Especially complicit, with blood on their hands, are supporters of Hamas on university campuses who chant for intifada and revolution. Also complicit are international organizations, such as the International Criminal Court, that treat Israel and Hamas as equals. These supporters of terrorism encouraged Hamas to hold out for many months in the belief that their support would pressure Israel into making more concessions.

The students of terror – the university students who are encouraging Hamas into continuing their murderous ways – must be held accountable for their complicity in evil. Though they may have the same First Amendment rights as Jews do, they should be treated with the same contempt that Nazis, the KKK and racist supporters of violence are treated. The First Amendment does not give them the right to be hired by decent employers.

The First Amendment gives employers the power to refuse to associate with supporters of Nazism, Hamas terrorism or other evil groups. American law criminalizes giving material support to designated terrorist groups, which include Hamas and Hezbollah. Morality, as distinguished from law, should deem immoral providing any support — material, political, economic or demonstrative – to any terrorist group such as Hamas. Yet both the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the Democrat Party urged people to listen to the messages of these protestors. They would never say that about demonstrators who favored lynching blacks or raping women. But Hamas does lynch Jews and rape Jewish women. There is no moral difference.

Let us welcome the news that perhaps 33 of the 98 hostages may be released, some of them alive, with the realization that what Hamas extorted from Israel in return for these releases may well endanger Israel’s security in the future and cost still more innocent lives.

And let us put the blame for ALL the deaths in Gaza where it belongs: on Hamas and the useful idiots and useless bigots who support murderous terrorists.
