Israel’s Defense Ministry and Rafael announced Tuesday that they have successfully completed a series of tests on an upgraded Iron Dome air defense system, incorporating operational lessons learned during the war and recent military operations against Iran.
According to the Defense Ministry, the upgraded system was tested against a range of advanced threats, including rockets, cruise missiles, and drones, while also introducing new capabilities designed to improve performance during large-scale, high-volume attacks.
The trials also included the integration of Israel’s new high-powered laser air defense system, “Magen Or” (Light Shield), into Iron Dome’s command-and-control network as part of the laser system’s ongoing operational rollout.
Officials said the successful tests represent a significant step toward strengthening Israel’s multilayered air defense network and improving preparedness for future conflicts.
Since becoming operational in 2011, Iron Dome has intercepted thousands of rockets and aerial threats. During the current war, the system played a central role in defending Israeli population centers and strategic infrastructure from attacks launched by Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Iran.
Defense Ministry Missile Defense Organization Director Moshe Patel said the recent conflicts demonstrated the need to continually adapt Israel’s air defenses to increasingly complex threats.
Rafael CEO Yoav Tourgeman said the latest trials successfully validated new capabilities, including the integration of the company’s laser defense system, which was recently delivered to the IDF. He said the upgrades will further expand Iron Dome’s capabilities against both current and future threats.
