celebrity idiot definition
The phrase “celebrity idiot” first appeared on the Internet in 1999, used by me and a few others to describe the political activism of some celebrities.
The reasons for the emergence of the phrase “celebrity idiots” on the Internet in 1999 was made clear two years later by Dave Brown who coined the term celebrityism; “a new belief system born out of the show business era, characterized by the illusion that things don’t happen unless famous people make them happen.”
Before the Internet, celebrities relied on publicists to spin their public images and celebrity public images were in turn re-spun and shaped by radio, television, newspapers, tabloids, and fan magazines.
Before the Internet, ridicule of their celebrity meal tickets was controlled and limited by corporate mass media gatekeepers.
Today, millions of ordinary people use the Internet to discuss, critique and ridicule celebrities on a daily basis, and the verdict is in; celebrities are idiots, according to many of the highly vocal critics among the Internet hoi polloi.
