Britain has now become the accessory to a death cult.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced today, with Canada and Australia expected to follow suit, that the UK was “recognising” what he called “a Palestinian state”.

Where is this state? Starmer can’t say. Where are its borders? He can’t say. Does it include all the “West Bank”, the disputed territories of Judea and Samaria? He can’t say. Does it include the hundreds of thousands of Jewish inhabitants of those territories? He can’t say. Who is the leader of its government? He can’t say.

To be recognised as a state, the Montevideo Convention requires that an entity must have a permanent population, defined territory, effective government and the capacity to engage in relations with other states. The “State of Palestine” meets none of those requirements because a “State of Palestine” does not exist.

No state can be conjured into existence out of thin air just because other people want it to exist. The “State of Palestine” is a fantasy, a hologram, a chimera, whose only tangible effect will be to validate a Potemkin “Palestinian” diplomatic infrastructure within an all-too willing global political establishment to accelerate the conditions for Israel’s destruction.

The sheer, incoherent idiocy of this initiative was very effectively illuminated by Trevor Phillips on his Sky show this morning. The justice secretary (and until recently Britain’s foreign secretary) David Lammy noted that there weren’t the two states that the UK would wish to exist for its long-bruited “two state solution” to the Israel-Arab impasse.

Phillips immediately spotted the obvious contradiction. Since the UK had recognised today a State of Palestine, he probed, there were now two states, yes? No! said Lammy. How so, asked Phillips, speaking no doubt for a confused nation. Under the pressure of Phillips’s unanswerable logic, Lammy admitted that “any decision to recognise a Palestinian state does not make a Palestinian state happen overnight”.

You don’t say! It turns out that what the Starmer government has now recognised as existing doesn’t exist at all, even though Starmer still recognises it. So what did the whole thing mean? Was this perhaps Shroedinger’s state — the geopolitical version of the famous scientific discovery that the cat was either present or not present inside the box depending on your perspective?

Recognition, explained Lammy, was instead “To keep that [peace] process alive”. To what end? Why, to create the two-state solution, of course! Which requires the creation of… a Palestinian state!

So today’s recognition is of …what, precisely? An aspiration? A process? An idea dreamed up in the bath? Frankly, this clown-show makes Neville Chamberlain look like a titan of far-sighted statesmanship.

And then there was Starmer’s actual statement, delivered with what he obviously thought was a statesmanlike slow pace appropriate to the historic global watershed he was creating but which merely allowed time to register its ineffable humbug.
